The pounding on the door woke me. I looked at the bedside clock. Four in the fucking morning, this had better be good. I fell out of bed and dragged the sheet with me, wrapping it around me as I stumbled to the door. Whoever it was they were going to hear what I thought of their timing. I jerked the door open.

“Uncle James? What the hell...?” I caught him as he fell. He was breathing hard, sweating like he'd been running.
“Cody,” he gasped. “Don't let them get this.” He shoved a box into my hand.
“Get what?”
He pushed away from me and hurried back down the steps of my Victorian row house toward the street. I heard shouting and Uncle James turned to run, he fell with the sound of two loud pops. Someone yelled and I slammed the door, throwing the deadbolt.
I swore and ran for my bedroom. My phone and my clothes were the first things I thought of. I'd call 911 and throw on some jeans. Whoever had been after Uncle James started banging on the door as I started to dial. I threw the phone down and grabbed my jeans just as I heard the door slam open. Fuck this; I headed out the window to the back fire escape. I could put the jeans on later.
