A covert government agency… A traitor to the cause… A wife who wants revenge… Burning hotter than a desert sun, revenge can change the fate of fortunes and lives.
Covert government operatives, Colt and Abbie Damron, a hunter/killer team are stationed in Latin America to find the route of political terrorists being smuggled across the American border. Juan Rico is a powerful smuggler dealing in both cocaine and illegal aliens. With the help of his brother, he uses his successful smuggling route to slip international terrorists across the border.
During a mission to eliminate one of the Rico brothers, a traitor in the agency gives Colt’s position away. He’s captured by Javier Rico to be used as a bargaining tool in order to get Juan released before he’s extradited to the United States.
When neither government will agree to the trade, Abbie slips back into a world she thought she’d left behind with the birth of her son. Having no other recourse, she launches a rescue mission of her own to retrieve her husband and seek revenge for his brutal treatment at Rico’s hands.
In a twist from the traditional male hero rescuing the girl, Abbie Damron shines as an intelligent, strong and yet feminine heroine who will stop at nothing to save the man she loves. After all, even an alpha male needs a little help sometimes.
Abbie heard the door to the cellar being unlocked and her heart leapt with a mixture of fear and anticipation. A man stood silhouetted in the doorway at the top of the stairs cautiously looking down at her. Even in the low light, Abbie could tell by his posture he was young and uncertain. "Please," Abbie said in the most non-threatening tone she could manage. "I’m hungry and thirsty. Will you bring me something to eat and drink? I don’t want any harm to come to my baby. He’s not moving and I’m scared." The guard frowned, glancing back over his shoulder, looking for permission from someone. It was obvious from his actions he was in no position to make any decisions of importance on his own. "Will you free my hands, sir?" Abbie asked, watching him respond to being called sir. That alone verified her suspicion he was in a low position of authority. "Look at me," she said mildly. "I’m five feet tall and eight months pregnant. How much of a threat am I?" She let tears slip over her cheeks, lowering her head as if she were ashamed of herself for crying. "I’m sure you could overpower me if I try to escape. I’m just so uncomfortable," she said between soft, heart-wrenching sobs. Abbie heard his tentative footsteps on the wooden stairs, but she didn’t allow herself to look up. Instead, she sat completely still, pretending to sob quietly, not moving, even when his scuffed boots came into view of her downcast eyes. She felt him lean over her and check the cuffs. At the touch of his hands on her wrists, she gave a whimper of pain and felt him stiffen. She wondered if she was overacting the part, but moments later, he pushed the key into the lock, freeing her hands. Still being careful, he stepped back immediately, watching as Abbie rubbed her wrists and shoulders thankfully. He relaxed slightly when she didn’t try to stand up. Abbie looked up then, giving him her dimpled smile through tearstained eyes. "Thank you," she whispered. "Gracias." She knew from the expression on his face she had won the first round. "I’ll be back," he said, in hesitant English, turning to climb the steps again. "Stay where you are and don’t make any noise. I’ll bring food and water." Abbie did as she was told. She sat quietly rubbing her shoulders and hands while waiting for him to return. She was fairly confident the circulation was back in her arms when she heard the locks on the door to the stairway being turned. It was now or never. Digging her hands into the floor, she gathered up two handfuls of loose dirt she had scuffed up with her shoes while she sat waiting. The guard made his way carefully down the narrow stairs, stopping a few feet in front of her to hold out a plate of food with one hand and a glass of water in the other. He was keeping out of reach, which meant someone had warned him about her. Abbie took advantage of the size of her belly and began moving around awkwardly as if she was trying to stand up from the dirt floor. Uncertain of what to do, the guard watched her struggle for a few moments. Glancing over his shoulder at the doorway to make certain he wouldn’t be seen disobeying orders, he leaned over to hand the refreshments down to her. It was the opportunity Abbie had been waiting for; she threw both handfuls of dust into his eyes. The guard yelped in a mixture of pain and surprise. Dropping the food and water, he instinctively clutched at his face with both hands. Abbie took the opening to grab his testicles, twisting and crushing them in her hand until he fell to the ground retching in blind agony. Despite the size of her belly, Abbie hoisted herself quickly to her feet. She didn’t hesitate; her baby’s life was in danger and possibly already harmed from the injections. She kicked the guard’s throat, not really caring if she crushed his windpipe. Then she ran up the stairs as fast as she could safely manage.
